Water: Students will understand the water cycle, including energy transfers, the distribution and characteristics of water, and its influences on human activity.

Note: Grade level is indicated in the 4th digit in the standard number
GRADESPRE-KINDERGARTEN thru 4
07.0.8.0.1 Students will recognize (in grades K-2) that water can exist as a solid, liquid or gas and can be changed from one form to the other
07.0.8.0.2 Students will recognize (in grades K-2) that water on Earth exists in different forms (e.g., rain, snow, ice, surface water)
07.0.8.0.3 Students will recognize (in grades K-2) that plants and animals need water to live
07.0.8.0.4 Students will recognize that water can exist as a gas in the air and can reappear as a liquid, if cooled, or s a solid, if cooled below the freezing point of water
07.0.8.0.5 Students will recognize that three-fourths of the Earth's surface is covered by water
07.0.8.0.6 Students will identify major sources of water (e.g., oceans, glaciers, rivers, groundwater, atmosphere)
07.0.8.0.7 Students will recognize the importance and use of water (e.g., drinking, washing, irrigating)
07.0.8.0.8 Students will recognize that water is essential to life.
GRADES5 thru 8
07.0.8.5.1 Students will recognize how the cycling of water in and out of the atmosphere plays an important role in determining climatic patterns and is responsible for constantly changing the phase and location of water
07.0.8.5.2 Students will recognize that water falling to Earth flows over the surface as runoff and collects in ocean basins, rivers, lakes, icecaps and underground
07.0.8.5.3 Students will recognize that water stored underground (subsurface) and water stored above ground (surface) form a continuum, each supplying water to the other.
GRADES9 thru 12
07.0.8.9.1 Students will recognize that the ocean is a complex system of important chemicals which cycle through other Earth systems over various periods of time
07.0.8.9.2 Students will recognize that fresh water is limited in supply and can be depleted or polluted, becoming unavailable or unsuitable for life
07.0.8.9.3 Students will explain interactions between water and other Earth systems (e.g., the biosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere)
07.0.8.9.4 Students will recognize that water is an erosional force that can rapidly and slowly change the landscape
07.0.8.9.5 Students will describe how the oceans absorb and release heat energy that moderates the Earth's climate
07.0.8.9.6 Students will describe how the physical and chemical properties of water affect the environment and life.
