What techniques and characteristics define the short story genre?
What methods do various authors use to create a single effect conveyed in a single significant episode or scene?
What is the style of several of the most reknown story writers – Hemingway, Poe, O’Henry, de Maupassant, Cisnernos, Carver?
How are the elements of plot, setting, characterization, tone, and literary devices used effectively by writers?

The short story is a unique type of fiction. Unlike other fiction, it is usually concerned with a single effect conveyed in a single significant episode or scene. Students will study the key components that distinguish and define short fiction, the genres of short fiction, and the style of several of the most reknown story writers – Hemingway, Poe, O’Henry, de Maupassant, Carver.
The units of study include:
-- The study of key elements of plot through a selection of short stories,
-- The study of key elements of setting through a selection of short stories,
-- The study of key elements of characterization through a selection of short stories,
-- The study of key elements of tone/mood through a selection of short stories,
-- The study of key elements of theme through a selection of short stories,
-- A genre study through a selection of short stories: contemporary realism, humor, adventure, suspense, detective story, animal story, historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, horror, folktale, and romance,
-- The study of style in renown short story writers,
-- An independent researched, analysis, and presentation of a selected story.

The learner will:
-- Understand and be able to utilize the following terms: plot, exposition, rising action, climax, denouement, characterization, flat character, round character, static character, dynamic character, setting, theme, tone, mood, conflict, foreshadowing, imagery, irony, genre, narrator, point of view, protagonist, and antagonist,
-- Identify the purpose of the story title,
-- Identify and analyze parts of the plot (exposition, rising action, climax, and denouement),
-- Recognize different characterization techniques,
-- Understand the function of the setting,
-- Identify and analyze different themes,
-- Understand the effect tone and mood have on the story,
-- Be able to identify the key components of a variety of literary genres: contemporary realism, humor, adventure, suspense, detective story, animal story, historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, horror, folktale, and romance,
-- Independently analyze and present an interpretation of a short story,
-- Research, utilizing both traditional and electronic resources, to develop a better understanding of literature,
-- Identify and recognize the function of figurative language in short stories,
-- Understand the concept of style and recognize key components of the styles in the writings of some of the following short story authors: Hemingway, Poe, O’Henry, de Maupassant, Cisnernos, Carver, or other distinquished short story authors.

All students will:
-- Be instructed in active, critical reading strategies and skills,
-- Be instructed in the literary terms, devices, and structures necessary for reading comprehension of various materials,
-- Be given the opportunity to respond to literature both orally and in written formats,
-- Be taught the numerous skills required for successful research and research writing,
-- Write a researched paper in MLA format,
-- Write a minimum of 3 papers following the complete writing process from the following modes: description, narration, exposition, persuasion, literary analysis, creative,
-- Complete 10 pages of written material (excluding tests and journals) by the end of the semester,
-- Deliver a speech/debate/dramatic reading/presentation in front of the class,
-- Be instructed in effective techniques and skills for public speaking,
-- Be guided in effective discussion strategies for circle/double circle discussions and Socratic seminars,
-- Be instructed on the skills and strategies necessary for interpreting, analyzing, and evaluating a visual communication,
-- Be instructed on audience decorum and appropriate responses.

Assessment of student performance will include such activities as journal responses, essay tests, essay assignments focusing on persuasive and critical/thematic topics, circle discussions, Socratic seminars, independent literary projects, and researched papers/projects and presentations. Students will also write original stories that reflect their understanding of the elements of short literature.

This class is offered at the SCP level and can be contracted up to ACP with the completion of an additional assignment outside of class time.
This class does satisfy the literature quarter-course requirement for seniors.
