As stated in Connecticut's 2005 World Language Curriculum Framework, there are six domains and nine content standards which frame world language content:

COMMUNICATION
1. How do I use another language to communicate with others?
2. How do I understand what others are trying to communicate in another language?
3. How do I present information, concepts, and ideas in another language in a way that is understood?

CULTURES
1. How do I use my understanding of culture to communicate and function appropriately in another culture?

CONNECTIONS
1. How do I use my understanding of another language and culture to reinforce and expand my knowledge of other disciplines, and vice versa?
2. How do I use my understanding of another language and culture to broaden and deepen my understanding of that language and culture and access and use information that would otherwise be unavailable to me?

COMPARISONS AMONG LANGUAGES
1. How do I demonstrate an understanding of the similarities, differences, and interactions across languages?

Honors Italian IV, taught exclusively in Italian, expands and edifies the four communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as the five C's of foreign language learning (communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities).

At this level, emphasis is placed on the practical use of basic skills previously learned in Italian I-III, integrating them into the creation of complex and sophisticated conversations and compositions.

Subject matter to be covered includes vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and idiomatic expressions pertaining to the following themes: agriturism in Italy; house and environment; agriculture; climate and nature; Italian holidays; scence and tchnology; music, theater and Italian film; Italy in the European Union.

Correct use of vocabulary and grammar from levels I-III will be emphasized and the presentation of finer points of grammar will be included (i.e. present and past conditional tenses, double object pronouns, subjunctive tense, and "if" clauses).



Students in Italian 4 will develop the abiility to exhibit the following skills specifically stated by the Connecticut State Department of Education World Languages Curriculum Framework:

COMMUNICATION
-- engage in conversation and correspondence, provide and obtain information, express feelings, and exchange opinions,
-- understand and interpret spoken and written language on a variety of topics,
-- present information, concepts, and ideas to listeners or readers on a variety of topics.

CULTURES
-- demonstrate an understanding of the products, practices, and perspectives of the cultures studied and use their cultural knowledge for interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational communication.

CONNECTIONS
-- reinforce and expand their knowledge of other areas of study through the world language, and vice versa,
-- acquire and use information from a variety of sources only available in the world language.

COMPARISONS AMONG LANGUAGES
-- demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons across cultures.

COMMUNITIES
-- use the world language and their cultural knowledge both within and beyond the school setting for personal enjoyment, enrichment, and active participation.






All Italian 4 students will:

-- Listen to the target language via teacher, native speakers, CD, video, and music,
-- Read and respond orally to culturally relevant situations using the target language,
-- Respond in writing to the material covered in the target language,
-- Respond orally to pictoral stories using the target language,
-- Create and deliver thematically-based projects,
-- Research and present information on culturally-assigned topics,
-- Participate in theme-based skits and dialogues,
-- Participate in grammar and vocabulary-building activities,
-- Participate in map activities,
-- Orally respond to questions on a variety of topics,
-- Read, summarize, and discuss information regarding the Italian culture,
-- Research and present a historical site in a specific region in Italy,
-- Compare and contrast culture based on authentic text and products,
-- Review previous levels' vocabulary and grammar,
-- Read literature and other texts in the target language and respond to them in oral and written form.




Students will be assessed by the following:

CAPT-style compositions
Oral presentations
Projects
Daily homework assignments

Midterm Exam: 50% qualitative, 50% quantitative
Final Exam: 50% qualitative, 50% quantitative




Students may participate in the following: guest speakers, cooking, singing, Italian film,
vocabulary, grammar and culture games, Power Point presentations, a world language concert, a field trip, outdoor bocce, travel abroad.
