This course focuses on:
*Use of contraception and responsible decision making to prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases
*Physical, emotional, and intellectual development of children from conception through age six
*Effective parenting skills, including the role of safety and health, family, and special challenges




Students will learn to:
*Support opinions with fact
*Use up-to-date resources to effectively present information
*Evaluate various childcare methods
*Plan age-appropriate activities for children
*Evaluate decisions related to contraception and sexual behaviors
*Identify challenges of pregnancy or infant care through simulation
*Recognize the importance of the role of parents to a child's future development




1. Recognition of the different types of families and the impact of parents on development through personal experiences
2. Read articles, watch videos, and engage in simulated experiences on teen pregnancy
3. Identify effects, treatment, and symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases
4. Identify various types of contraception, correct use, and effectiveness
5. Evaluate personal child-care experiences, available options for childcare and identify pros and cons of each
6. Will brainstorm appropriate ways of handling possible problems that may arise among children at various levels of development
7. Use personal experience and the experiences of other to evaluate the impact of childhood and how it shapes the adult
8. Identify birth defects and various special needs, their effects on the child and ways for parent to help the child cope
9. Discuss the importance of learning about children and how they develop either for a child-related career or to become a parent
10. Discuss proper nutrition and health during pregnancy and the consequences if not followed
