1. How is the illusion of form depicted on a two-dimensional plane?
2. How do value and contrast affect the mood of an image?
3. What is Chiarscuro?

This unit emphasizes the following concepts: ten-step range of value, pencil techniques to show value (ie. stippling, crosshatching, rubbings, scumbling, and hatching), lost and found edges, illusion of 3-dimensional form/ Chiarscuro, color to value, emotional qualities of value, and eye movement through value.

In rendering form with light and shade, students will develop the ability to:
-- utilize a minimum ten-step range of value,
-- incorporate a variety of pencil techniques to show value (ie. stippling, crosshatching, rubbings, scumbling, and hatching),
-- create lost and found edges,
-- create the illusion of 3-dimensional form/Chiarscuro,
-- translate color to value.

All students will:

-- create a ten-step value scale,
-- incorporate a variety of pencil techniques to show value (ie. stippling, crosshatching, rubbings, scumbling, and hatching),
-- use value to create lost and found edges,
-- create the illusion of 3-dimensional form/Chiarscuro,
-- translate color to value.

The artistic portfolio is the visual assessment of learned skills as well as documentation of personal and aesthetic growth
Group critiques give insight into the creative process and problem-solving, providing an avenue for analyzing, reflecting, and judging the merits and weaknesses of their own and others' work in order to improve one's personal work.
Homework is part of the student portfolio and serves as a timeline of learning and growth through the regular and continual practice of learned skills.
