1. How does having a repetoire of artistic techniques add to a student's personal expression?
2. How have artists used various art materials over time?
3. How are art materials and supplies used safely?
4. How are specific technical devices utilized to create depth convincingly?



This unit emphasizes the safe and appropriate use of art materials, values/gradients,
collage/mixed media, linear perspective, pencil techniques, art history, the psychological and physiological use of color, and the use of a variety of art materials.



Students will develop the ability to:
-- utilize a variety of media and techniques to render different surfaces,
-- replicate (on a 2-dimensional surface) form according to observation using different media,
-- handle art materials in a safe and appropriate manner,
-- incorporate the principles of design with purpose and sensitivity in accordance to the materials being used,
-- implement a variety of technical devices to successfully portray depth,
-- use a variety of materials in consideration of subject matter and intent,
-- reflect on the use of the artistic techniques and processes of others and of themselves.



All students will:

-- replicate texture using a variety of pencil techniques,
-- create gradients to show form using a variety of art materials,
-- handle art materials in a safe and responsible manner,
-- implement a number of devices to convincingly portray depth,
-- use a variety of art materials with consideration of intent,
-- reflect on their own and others' artwork.




The artistic portfolio is the visual assessment of learned skills as well as a documentation of personal and aesthetic growth
Group critiques give insight into the creative process and problem-solving, providing an avenue for analyzing, reflecting, and judging the merits and weaknesses of their own and others' work in order to improve one's personal work.
Homework is part of the student portfolio and serves as a timeline of learning and growth through the regular and continual practice of learned skills.



Students will attend field trips to look at historical and contemporary artwork.
