What are the key signatures for major and minor keys?
What are the differences between a major scale and the three types of minor scales?
What is a triad and what are the 4 qualities they may possess?
What are the different types of non-chord tones and how are they used?

In this unit, the students will learn key signatures via the circle of fifths. They will memorize keys signatures for the major and minor keys. They will also learn how to correctly write key signatures on the treble and bass staves.
Students will also compose scales in major and the three types of minor: Natural, harmonic and melodic.
Once the students have an understanding of key signatures and scales, the concept of triads and their inversions will be introduced. All triads that are diatonic to the major and minor keys will be covered. Non-chord tones and their functions will also be introduced.

The student will:
Reproduce the Circle of Fifths for major and minor keys
Compose scales in major and all forms of minor scales using both key signatures and accidentals
Spell all diatonic chords for major and minor keys
Spell chords using inversions
Identify and define all types of Non-Chord tones

Each student will:
Drill key signatures and triads using the Music Lessons I computer software
Aurally and visually identify major and three types of minor scales using the Music Lessons I software as well as via board work and homework
Compose short musical examples using non-chord tones

Students will be assessed via tha following means:
Drills on the computer using Music Lessons I software
Written and aural quizzes-scales and triads
Written test on Circle of Fifths
Written test on NCT's
