Melody, Cadences and Harmonic Progression

What is a musical cadence?
How is a pleasing melody achieved?
What is a harmonic progression and how is it used to compose music?



In this unit, the students will learn begin composing music. Musical phrases, cadences, harmonic progressions and melody will all be introduced. The student will utilize the elements of music theory learned to this point, incorporating note reading, rhythm and triads. At this point in the course, the student can begin to explore his/her creative side by composing music containing their own ideas. Students will compose in both major and harmonic minor using correct harmonic progressions and cadences.



The student will:
Compose 16-measure compositions using correct harmonic progressions
Compose musical phrases puncuated by an appropriate cadence
Compose a melody that is compatable harmonically with the harmonic progession



Each student will:
Compose many compositions in both major and harmonic minor keys. Compositions will be input into the FINALE music notation software program
Compose using simple and compound meters




Students will be assessed via the following means:
Compositions
Written quizzes and tests
Homework on progressions and cadences
