What elements of musical terminology are found in the music we are performing and how do they help us interpret the music?
The unit of musicianship skills is an on going unit in Chorale. It is designed to take the basics learned in Mixed Chorus and expand upon them in Chorale. More advanced musical terminology is introduced and executed throughout the year. Focus will also be placed upon more advanced sight singing. Focus will be placed upon , but not limited to, the following elements:
*Reading the notes written on the treble and bass staves
*Reading and executing rhythms written in the following time signatures: 2/2, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8 and others if they arrise.
*Reading and executing all dynamics represented in the music
*Reading and accurately executing all articulation and expression markings represented in the music
*Identifying and executing all tempo markings written in the music
*Identifying key signatures for major and minor keys via introduction of the Circle of 5ths
*Using movable DO based solfege in sight singing.
The students will demonstrate:
- -an understanding of time signatures by counting and clapping musical examples written in 2/2, 2/4, 2/4, 4/4, 3/8 and 6/8
-an understanding of dynamics, articulation symbols, expression symbols and their definitions through performance
-the ability to correctly identify pitches written on the treble and bass staves through written quizzes, performance and class discussion.
-the ability to identify key signatures for major and minor keys
-the ability to use the moveable DO sight singing method
-the ability to define and execute markings for tempo
Students will clap many rhythmic examples, alone and in groups, for simple and compound meters.
Students will identify and perform musical symbols found in their music.
Students will be expected to use proper musical terminology in class discussions.
Students will receive sight singing examples written in many different keys. Students will use movable DO for sight singing. Students will also attempt to sight sing through new pieces of music that are received in addition to sight singing examples.
Students will learn the circle of 5ths for major and minor keys.
Write a self evaluation or review of the three music concerts they participate in throughout the school year. The evaluations are expected to be in correct essay format using proper musical terminology.
Students in chorale will be assessed for understanding via the following methods:
-written quizzes on musical terminology-short answer, identify and define
-class discussion
-daily performance of music with appropriate musical markings
-written self-evaluation
-daily class participation
