What are the basic music terminology for note reading, tempo, dynamics and articulation?

The unit of Musical Terminology is an on going unit in Mixed Chorus. It is designed to introduce the students to BASIC music terminology for note reading, dynamics, expression, articulation, time signatures and key signatures. New concepts will be introduced as they are presented in the music being worked on at the time. Focus will also be placed upon how to read a choral octavo.
What are the names of the lines and spaces of the treble and bass staves?
What is a leger line?
What are the different voice types and ranges for choral music?
What is a time signature?
What is a key signature?
What are the values for the following notes and their corresponding rests in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8 and 3/8: whole, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenths?
What are do the different symbols for dynamics mean?
What are the appropriate articulation symbols and definitions for legato, staccatto, slur, phrase, accent, etc.?
What is tempo?
What are expression techniques and symbols?

Students will demonstrate:
-an understanding of time signatures by counting and clapping musical examples written in 2/4, 2/4, 4/4, 3/8 and 6/8
-an understanding of dynamics, articulation symbols, expression symbols and their definitions through performance
-the ability to correctly identify pitches written on the treble and bass staves through written quizzes and class discussion.

Students will receive handouts and will have class discussions on: note reading, times signatures, key signatures, articulation, expression and dynamics.
Students will clap many rhythmic examples, alone and in groups, for simple and compound meters.
Students will identify and perform musical symbols found in their music.
Students will be expected to use proper musical terminology in class discussions.
Write a self evaluation or review of the three music concerts they participate in throughout the school year. The evaluations are expected to be in correct essay format using proper musical terminology.

Students in mixed chorus will be assessed for understanding via the following methods:

-class discussion
-performance
-self-evaluation
-class participation
