01.2 THE ARTS - MUSIC

01.2.1.0.1 -- Students will sing independently on pitch and in rhythm, with appropriate timbre, diction and posture, and maintain a steady tempo

01.2.1.0.2 -- Students will sing expressively, with appropriate dynamics, phrasing and interpretation

01.2.1.0.3 -- Students will sing from memory a varied repertoire of songs representing genres and styles from diverse cultures

01.2.1.0.4 -- Students will sing ostinatos, partner songs and rounds

01.2.1.5.1 -- Students will sing accurately and with good breath control throughout their singing ranges, alone and in small and large ensembles

What constitutes a characteristically healthy vocal sound?

How does diaphragmatic breathing affect breath control and support?

How are uniform vowels achieved within the ensemble and how do vowel shapes affect the tone quality of the ensemble?




The unit of vocal technique is on going through out the year. Students will learn the proper techniques for:
*Diaphragmatic breathing
*Correct singing posture
*Vowel shapes and production
*Navigating through the different vocal registers
*Singing and the changing male voice
*Extending the singing range
*Using the body's natural resonators and articulators




The student will:
*Demonstrate an understanding of diaphragmatic breathing
*Compare and contrast breath support and breath control
*Explain the importance of blend and balance within a choral ensemble
*Demonstrate proper posture for singing
*Demonstrate an understanding of performing with uniform vowels and consonants
*Demonstrate an understanding of tone quality by singing with a characteristicly warm, healthy sound
*Explain the different vocal ranges and what techniques are helpful when naivigating thought them



Each day in mixed chorus, the student will:
*Sing a variety of vocal warm-ups designed to expand their range, teach proper vowel formation, strengthen breath support and control
*Incorporate skills from vocal warm-ups into daily rehearsal of repertoire
*Focus on blending with in their vocal section and balancing their sound with the ensemble
*Participate in daily class discussions on progress made within the rehearsal. Suggestions will be given by the students on how to improve upon the sound production




Students will be assessed by the following means:
* Aural assessment by both teacher and student
*Oral discussion on improvement of tone quality using proper musical terminology
*Written quizzes
*Visual assessment on proper singing posture
