01.2 THE ARTS - MUSIC

01.2.2.5.1 -- Students will perform on at least one instrument accurately and independently, alone and in small and large ensembles, with good posture, good playing position and good breath, bow or stick control

01.2.2.0.6 -- Students will perform independent instrumental parts while other students sing or play contrasting parts.

01.2.2.0.1 -- Students will perform on pitch, in rhythm, with appropriate dynamics and timbre, and maintain a steady tempo

How important are scales to playing technique in a musical ensemble?

**Throughout this unit, students will be introduced to the basic musical knowlege needed to perform a grade 2 piece or higher. Students will be responsiblie for performing the following scales, which will be rehearsed at each rehearsal. The ensemble will focus on one scale at a time, followed by an individual scale test.

-B Flat Concert Scale
-G Concert Scale
-E Flat Concert Scale
-D Concert Scale

**Students will also take part in discussions and shown examples of how scales are used in music.

**Students will be introduced to the following rhythmic concepts and work to apply them to their performance repitoire.
-Rhythm: Quarter, Eighth, Half, and Whole Notes, Basic Dotted Rhythm

-Meter: 4/4, 3/4, 2/4

-Rests: Quarter, Eighth, Half, and Whole Notes, Basic Dotted Rhythm

**In addition, the following vocabulary words/symbols will be introduced and worked into daily rehearsals as presented in performance repitoire.

-Vocabulary: key signature, time signature, staff, note head, stem, flat, sharp, natural, bar line, double bar line, repeat sign, first & second endings, breath mark, leger line,





1) Students will perform B flat, G, E flat, and D Major scales alone and with ensemble

2) Student will use correct All-State rhythmic patterns when performing scales

3) Student will articulate how and why scales are an important part of music

4) Students will demonstrate the ability to perform rhythms from whole notes to basic dotted rhythms accurately

5) Students will describe the meaning of time signatures 4/4, 3/4, 2/4

6) Students will define the following vocabulary words and apply them to music which they are performing:
key signature, time signature, staff, note head, stem, flat, sharp, natural, bar line, double bar line, repeat sign, first & second endings, breath mark, leger line



-Student will practice scales during each ensemble rehearsal and on own

-Student will be tested regularly on scales and musical knowlege

-Students will read new rhythmic patterns while clapping and counting aloud on a daily basis in rehearsals

-All students will experience weekly/bi-weekly individual testing on Major scales







Students will be assessed regularly through the following means:
1) scale playing tests
2) written tests focusing on music knowlege, vocabulary, etc.
3) sectional rehearsal observations
4) individual instruction



Students will have the opportunity to study with a professional on their own instrument through participation in the Community School of the Arts Satelite Program, through the Universtiy of Connecticut. This program bring professional musicians from Connecticut to Woodstock Academy to offer private instruction to our students.
