-What is a regular practice routine?

-What is propper playing technique (emboucher, posture, hand position, etc.)?

-What is a characteristic tone quality for each instument?

-How does instrumental breathing differ from breathing during normal activity



This unit is designed to introduce students to the basic technical skills based around thier chosen instrument. While these skills are introduced in this unit, they are skills which should constantly be revisited and worked on throughout daily rehearsals. The student goals of this unit are to:

1) Establishing a regular practice routine

2) Understand and demonstrate proper posture in rehearsals, practice sessions, and performances

3) Demonstrate proper playing position not only with the goal of producing characteristic tone qualities and removing physical hinderinces, but also to prevent injury due to incorrect hand/ stick position

4) Play with a correct emboucher

5)Demonstrate clean, accurate, and appropriate articulations:legato, staccato, slurred, and apply them to performance repetiore

6) Develop a Characteristic Tone Quality on ones' instrument

7) Demonstrate and understand proper breathing technique



-Students will establish and document a regular practice routine
-Students will use proper playing position during individual practice as well as ensemble rehearsal
-Students will demonstrate proper playing posture
-Students will use correct breathing technique
-Students will Perform Legato, Staccato, and Slur Articulations accurately
-Student will develop a tone quality characteristic to their instrument

Percussion: Students will demonstrate proper stick grip, position, and posture

WInds: Students will demonstrate proper hand position, posture, and correct emboucher formation



Students will perform no less than 3 times per year demonstrating proper execution of these skills
Students will perform a grade level III piece accurately (correct rhythm, articulation, style, etc.)



Playing tests using playing assesment rubric
student will be assesed in the following:
Posture/playing postition, breathing, correct notes, ryhthmic accuaracy, phrasing, articulation, overall musicianship

Practice charts filled in by students and handed in

Visual observation during rehearsals and sectionals

Daily class grade based on participation, posture, preparedness, etc.
