01.2.2.0.1 -- Students will perform on pitch, in rhythm, with appropriate dynamics and timbre, and maintain a steady tempo

Symphonic Band is a continuation of Concert Band. Symphonic Band is designed for the older musicians who have mastered most of the basic skills for ensemble playing and are ready for more advanced lituature and musical ideas. This ensemble works to take music beyond the basics and into the emotional aspect of music while focusing on technically advanced repitoire. This class is not only for advanced musicians, but also requires a high level of maturity. Symphonic Band will take the concepts of Concert Band and bring them to the next level of musicianship.

1) Tone Quality through warm-up exercises, chorales, and repertoire.
2) Blending techniques: understanding of ones own place within the sound of the ensemble while learning to bring out important musical lines
3) Phrasing: Through singing and discussion of musical goals within a piece
4) Intonation throughout all ranges of the instrument: through singing of individual parts and chorales and tuning routine as wel as increased range and flexibility throughout the instrument
5) Dynamics appropriate not only to the piece but all musicians within the ensemble as well as the performance venue
6) Clean and appropriate articulation
7) Understanding and application of musical terms and symbols
8) Musical notation
9) Note Values and meters
10) Use and function of key signatures and accidentals
11) Major Scales
12) Brief historical background material for pieces
13) Varied and advanced Repertoire: Music of different styles, cultures, and time periods.







The students in Symphonic Band will develop the ability to:

*Tune instrument independently within daily routine
*Demonstrate an acceptable tone quality characteristic to their specific instrument
*Demonstrate proper breathing, posture, and embouchure
*Develop positive individual practice habits
*Demonstrate appropriate rehearsal and concert etiquitte
*Play in tune within the ensemble
*Perform with awareness of their own place within the sound of the ensemble and demonstrate both blend and balance
*Phrase with sensitivity to musical line
*Perform appropriate dynamics within performance repertoire
*Perform clean and accurate articulations in several styles( staccato, leggato, accented)





As a member of Symhponic Band, the student will:

* Be taught to tune their own instrument
*Make music both alone and interactively with others
*Participate in self analysis of performances both in and out of concert
settings
*Be tested on their ability to play assigned major scales
*Participate in public performance opportunities
*Be instructed on proper performance and rehearsal etiquitte
*Perform music from a variety of musical genres
*Continue to build upon knowledge of musical terminology and incorporate said terminology into everyday class discussions and performances.
*Learn healthy playing and warm-up techniques

*The WAMD tries to take a music department trip annually to a music festival where the students can be adjudicated. This helps to give the students constructive criticism as well as reenforces the daily rehearsal concepts covered in Symphonic Band. WAMD has traveled to such places as Toronto, Virginia Beach, New York City, Washington, D.C. and performed in the Magical Music Days at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

*Freshmen-seniors that are a member of the WAMD Instrumental program are eligible to audition for the extra curricular instrumental ensembles Jazz Band and Drum Line.

*Any student that is a member of the WAMD Instrumental program is eligible to audition for the CMEA Eastern Region Music Festival and the NEMFA Music Festival. Instrumentalists in Concert Band or Symphonic Band may also be considered for nomination to the Quinebaug Valley Music Festival Honor Band.




Music will be selected from the Woodstock Academy Instrumental Library with supplemental pieces being purchased from vendors such as J.W. Pepper. Currently, the WAMD Instrumental library has over 400 titles.
