         MAP LEVEL:
07.0 SCIENCE

07.0.4.9.1 -- Students will understand the role of the cell membrane in controlling materials entering and leaving the cell

07.0.4.9.3 -- Students will explain that the structure and function of cells depends on proteins, which are made of specific sequences of amino acids coded by the DNA, that are unique to each individual

07.0.4.9.4 -- Students will know that cell behavior can be influenced by other cells, chemicals or other organisms

07.0.4.9.6 -- Students will know that cells function in a narrow range of physical conditions, such as temperature and pH, to carry out life functions that help them maintain themselves (homeostasis)

07.0 SCIENCE

What are the main functions of the cell membrane and how does its structural design serve its function?
What are the criteria for passive and active transport and what are the various mechanisms for each?

1. Resources needed in the cell as well as wastes that must exit the cell
2. The role of the plasma membrane as a barrier
3. Movement of materials into and out of the cell --
Passive systems: diffusion, osmosis, facilitative diffusion
Active systems: active transport, endocytosis, exocytosis

Students in Biology will develop the ability to:
1. Describe the structure of the cell membrane and relate it to its function,
2. Explain what is needed in the cell and what must exit the cell,
3. Describe and offer examples of the various modes of transport into and
out of the cell:
A. Passive transport: diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis
B. Active transport: protein pumps, bulk transport (endocytosis by pinocytosis, phagocytosis, exocytosis and the role of vesicles).

Investigation of cell permeability through artificial cells in laboratory

Objective/Subjective testing (50-60:50-40 percent ratio)
Laboratory experience: (Properties of cell membranes)
Cooperative activiities
