Why do cells divide?
How is the cell cycle related to cell reproduction?
How does aberration of the mechanism relate to cancer?
What is the relationship between cell development and stem cells?

1. Asexual modes of reproduction
2. Factors influencing the cell cycle including SA/Vol
3. Phases of the cell cycle
4. Cell cycle aberrations (i.e. cancer)
5. Stem cell technology and its role in development of differentiated tissue
6. Phases of cell reproduction

Students in Biology will develop the ability to:
1. Identify phases of reproduction using Allium Root Tip prepared slides,
2. Relate the SA/Vol ratio to the cell's capacity to interact with its environment,
3. Identify the consequence of uncontrolled cell growth,
4. Confirm and draw conclusions of the potential for stem cell research to resolve problems associated with differentiated cell repair due to damage/breakdown.

1. Analysis of surface area/volume in relation to nutrient absorption
2. Observation of allium root tips for cell cycle stage identification

Objective/subjective testing (40-50: 60-50 percent)
Laboratory experiences--
Allium root tip slides (for phase ID and term)
Surface area/volume studies
Cooperative activities
Class discussion
