Students will develop the ability to:
1. Locate and explain use of each safety feature in the lab
2. Properly and safely light a bunsen burner
3. Properly and safely transfer liquids in the lab
4. Explain first response to varied lab emergencies
5. Properly and safely heat liquid to boiling in a test tube and a beaker



1. View demo: wine to water to milk
2. Discuss lab safety contract
3. View demo: acid in your eye
4. Draw a safety map of the lab indicating the location of each safety feature
5. Coop groups--practice explaining first response to hypothetical lab problems
6. Practice properly lighting bunsen burners
7. Practice properly transferring liquids
8. Practice heating liquids in test tubes and beakers




1. Spot check students ability to explain proper first response to varied emergencies in the lab
2. Performance evaluation of student's ability to light a burner, transfer liquids and heat liquids to boiling in a test tube and in a beaker
2. Lab safety test (students must achieve at least a 90% or they must study and take another test)
