         MAP LEVEL:

How do the economics drive the development and progress of the biotechnology industry?

How does a biotechnology product get from an idea to the market?

BIOTECHNOLOGY
555/554
This course requires a previous exposure to biology. It offers
a more in-depth investigation into techniques and applications of
biotechnology. Students will also discuss ethical issues associated
with existing and emerging uses of biotechnology such as cloning,
DNA testing and genetic engineering. Students will gain hands
on experience with basic biotech techniques such as bacterial
transformation, DNA electrophoresis and protein purification.
Computer simulations will be used to experience more complex
techniques. Career opportunities in biotechnology will also be
explored. This is a required course in both the Health and
Bioscience and Environmental, Natural Resources and Agriculture
School to Career clusters. This course is offered on a contract
basis for ACP or SCP level.
Pre: Successful completion of Biology
Credit: 1 E/ACP/SCP Gr: 11, 12This unit introduces students to the business aspects of the Biotech industry. Components of the unit are interspersed with other topics as they apply. Topics in this unit include an introduction to the stock market, drug discovery and the FDA New Drug Approval Process as well as an overview of patents. Students complete a Biotech Company Stock Market project throughout the semester.

Students in Biotechnology will develop the ability to:
A. Recognize that biotechnology is cutting-edge and will impact the food we eat, our health care, and our lifestyles,
B. Identify the process of science that occurs as investigators build upon work of other investigations in the area of molecular genetics,
C. Discover the many products that contain enzymes which may have been made by recombinant DNA technology,
D. Describe the purpose of the stock market, relate its importance to the company selling the stock, and investigate how internal and external events affect the worth of shares,
E. Outline the drug discovery and development process, describing the importance of high throughput screening, medicinal chemistry and the FDA Investigational New Drug Approval Process.
