Concepts are then applied to the understanding the science behind stem cell research and therapies as well as cloning. Students gain an appreciation for the complexity and nuances of the social, legal, and ethical issues around embryonic stem cell research, therapeutic and reproductive cloning. 500 Students in Biotechnology will develop the ability to: 500 A. Apply the processes of mitosis and meiosis to cell cloning and stem cell research, 500 B. Define stem cell and explain its purpose in the body, 500 C. Distinguish between totipotent, pluripotent, and multipotent stem cells and list the sources of these cells, 500 D. Discuss the applications of stem cell research, 500 E. Discuss the ethical, social, and legal issues involved in the stem cell research: debate and distinguish between embryonic stem cell research and adult stem cell research, 500 F. Recognize how moral viewpoints and personal experiences affect ones position on embryonic stem cell research, 500 G. Recognize the limitations and roadblocks to the development of successful stem cell therapies, 500 H. Outline the steps of somatic cell nuclear transfer, 500 I. Differentiate therapeutic cloning from reproductive cloning, 500 J. Discuss applications of cloning and ethical and social issues related to these applications. 500 600 Hello Dolly Webquest (Cloning) or other presentation project 700 Subjective and Objective Testing 700 Hello Dolly Webquest Presentation or other project 700 820 Genetic Science Learning Center 820 "Stem Cells in the Spotlight" Module http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/units/stemcells/index.cfm 820 820 "Cloning in Focus" Module http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/units/cloning/index.cfm 820 820
