07.0.4.9.5 -- Students will describe the processes and results of mitosis and meiosis

How are stem cells involved in the process of tissue renewal and regeneration?

How can stem cells be used to treat degenerative disorders that currently lack effective treatments?

What are the potential applications of somatic cell nuclear transfer?

What are the social, moral and ethical issues regarding the use of the the variety of stem cell types?

In this unit students review the principles behind mitotic and meiotic cell division. Concepts are then applied to the understanding the science behind stem cell research and therapies as well as cloning. Students gain an appreciation for the complexity and nuances of the social, legal, and ethical issues around embryonic stem cell research, therapeutic and reproductive cloning.

Students in Biotechnology will develop the ability to:
A. Apply the processes of mitosis and meiosis to cell cloning and stem cell research,
B. Define stem cell and explain its purpose in the body,
C. Distinguish between totipotent, pluripotent, and multipotent stem cells and list the sources of these cells,
D. Discuss the applications of stem cell research,
E. Discuss the ethical, social, and legal issues involved in the stem cell research: debate and distinguish between embryonic stem cell research and adult stem cell research,
F. Recognize how moral viewpoints and personal experiences affect ones position on embryonic stem cell research,
G. Recognize the limitations and roadblocks to the development of successful stem cell therapies,
H. Outline the steps of somatic cell nuclear transfer,
I. Differentiate therapeutic cloning from reproductive cloning,
J. Discuss applications of cloning and ethical and social issues related to these applications.
