How do mutations and their inheritance result in genetic disorders?

How can genetic testing be used at various stages of development be used to prevent, reduce the risk of or treat genetic disorders?

What are moral and ethic issues regarding different types of genetic testing?

One of the focuses of biotechnology is to diagnose, prevent, and treat genetic disorders. In this unit student research a genetic disorder which they present to the class. Methods of genetic screening are discussed and evaluated. Social and ethical issues related to pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), newborn screening programs, and adult genetic testing are discussed.

Students in Biotechnology will develop the ability to:
A. Explain how mutation to the genetic material in the cell is responsible for genetic disorders,
B. Relate the chromosome theory of inheritance to the expression of a genetic disorder,
C. Predict the probability that a child will inherit a genetic disorder based on the genotypes of the parents using a variety of inheritance patterns (autosomal recessive and dominant, sex linked, chromosomal and codominance),
D. Apply knowledge of biochemistry concepts to the expression of a variety of genetic disorders,
E. Distinguish between life-threatening disorders, life altering disorders, and genetic difference,
F. Outline and explain approaches to preventing and treating genetic disorders and discuss what limits the ability to apply each approach,
G. Outline the process of Preimplentation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and evaluate its application using a variety of case studies and ethical and insurance guidelines,
H. Discuss the benefits of newborn genetic screen and evaluate the cost effectiveness of such a process in a variety of case studies,
I. Discuss the benefits and risks of genetic screening for disorders without effective treatment using Huntington Disease as a case study,
J. Evaluate the concerns regarding genetic testing and privacy, insurance coverage, and job security.
