How can the immune system be used to produce treatments for diseases and diagnositc tests for diseases and medical conditions?

This unit is only done if there is enough time in the semester. As new advancements in biotechnology are made more is added to other topics. This results in less time to cover this topic.
In this unit students learn about the human immune system and how it works to fight off infections. They then learn about how the immune system can be used to produce monoclonal antibodies and their application in diagnositic tests and treatment of cancer, alleries, and autoimmune diseases.

Students will be able to:
A. Outline the components of the immune system and describe how T and B lymphocytes orchestrate and attach on pathogens and establish immunity against future attacks,
B. Explain the procedure used to produce monoclonal antibodies,
C. Explain how monoclonal antibodies can be used to diagnosis infections such as strep and conditions such as pregnancy,
D. Explain how monoclonal antibodies can be used to treat disorders such as cancer, allergies, and autoimmune diseases.
