How is DNA (the material of heredity) responsible for an organism's inherited traits?

How can this process be manipulated in applications of biotechnology?

This unit reviews and expands on the molecular biology concepts initially covered in sophomore biology course. Students gain a detailed understanding of the central dogma of biology (DNA - RNA -Protein -Trait). Replication, protein synthesis and regulation of gene expression are covered in detail, preparing the students to study their applications in biotechnology.

Students in Biotechnology will develop the abiltiy to:
A. Explain how DNA gives us evidence for the unity of all life as well as the diversity,
B. Draw the DNA molecule and label nucleotides and their components,
C. Given one strand of DNA, students can draw the complimentary strand,
D. Create and construct 3d models of DNA with kits or their own materials,
E. Draw or create models to clearly demonstrate how DNA replicates,
F. Explain how DNA replication permits genetic information to be transmitted from generation to generation,
G. Demonstrate and explain that DNA nucleotide sequences carry a code, and how a simple code of four "letters" conveys a great deal of information,
H. Label the parts of a diagram showing protein synthesis and correctly explain the events of protein synthesis in the correct order,
I. Demonstrate using diagram or models how mutations can occur during replication and protein synthesis and demonstrate the functional and/or structural results of mutations,
J. Explain how gene expression is controlled in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells,
K. Describe how a DNA microarray is used to conduct a gene expression study and interpret the results of such an experiment.
