01.2 THE ARTS - MUSIC

01.2.2.0.1 -- Students will perform on pitch, in rhythm, with appropriate dynamics and timbre, and maintain a steady tempo

01.2.2.0.2 -- Students will perform easy rhythmic, melodic and chordal patterns accurately and independently, alone and in small and large ensembles, with good posture, good playing position and good breath, bow or stick control

Concert Band is a class designed to teach basic ensemble skills to younger academy musicians. Students are expected to develop independant practice habbits and demonstrate a high level of self descipline as well as excellent ensemble interaction. Through out the year, students will learn the basic music reading, rhythmic patterns, meters, and major scales. Students will also develop good technique for tuning, and musicality needed to be succesful in creating music with an ensemble. In addition, students will be exposed to a vide variety of music from different time periods, cultures, and genres to include but not be limited to :
Marches, Chorales, Pop Music (for the pops concert), Transcriptions of classic orchestral works, etc. Student's work will culminate in public performances throughout the year.

The Music Department currently has 3 public performances as follows: Winter Concert in December:combined choral program with band program at the Hyde School, Spring Concert: choral and band programs are in separate concerts taking place in the Woodstock Academy Auditorium (the band portion is over 2 nights, on the first night the incomming 8th graders are invited to participate), and The Pops Concert: this is once again combined with choral ensembles and bands. This is an outdoor concert, weather permitting. Often, the Concert and Symphonic Band are combined for this performance.

Throughout the year, students will work on skills in the following areas

1) Tone Quality through warm-up exercises, chorales, and repitore.
2) Blending techniques: understanding of ones own place within the sound of the ensemble
3) Phrasing: Through singing and discussion of musical goals within a piece
4) Intonation: through singing of individual parts as well as chorales and tuning routine
5) Dynamics
6) Articulation
7) Musical terms and symbols
8) Musical notation
9) Note Values and meters
10) Use and function of key signatures and accidentals
11) Major Scales
12) Brief historical background material for pieces
13) Varied Repitiore: Music of different styles, cultures, and time periods.







Students will:

1) Tune instrument independantly within daily routine
2) Demonstrate a tone quality characteristic to chosen instrument
3) Demonstrate proper breathing, posture, and embouchure
4) Develop positive individual practice habbits
5) Demonstrate appropriate rehearsal and concert etiquate
6) Play in tune within the ensemble
7)Perform with awareness of their own place within the sound of the ensemble and demonstrate both blend and balance
8) Phrase with sensitivity to musical line
9) Perform appropriate dynamics within performance repitoire
10) Perform clean and accurate articulations in several styles( staccato, leggato, accented)





*All students will demonstrate proper tuning technique on their own instrument
*All students will participate in self analysis of performances both in and out of concert settings
*All students will experience weekly/bi-weekly individual testing on Major scales
*All students will participate in public performance opportunities
*All students will be instructed on proper performance and rehearsal etiquiette
*All students will be exposed to music of a variety of generes, time periods, and cultures to include but not be limited to :
Marches, Chorales, Pop Music (for the pops concert), Transcriptions of classic orchestral works, etc.
*All students will learn about the history of the pieces composers which they are performing
*All students will listen to professional recordings and form educated opinions about the quality and likeness to ones own playing



*Students will be assessed through participation in 3 performances per year.
*Student will recieve a daily grade based on rehearsal conduct and participation, posture, preparedness, and if a student has brought all necessary materials to rehearsal.

*The WAMD tries to take a music department trip annually to a music festival where the students can be adjudicated. This helps to give the students constructive criticism as well as reinforces the daily rehearsal concepts covered in Symphonic Band. WAMD has traveled to such places as Toronto, Virginia Beach, New York City, Washington, D.C. and performed in the Magical Music Days at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

*Freshmen-seniors that are a member of the WAMD Instrumental program are eligible to audition for the extra curricular instrumental ensembles Jazz Band and Drum Line.

*Any student that is a member of the WAMD Instrumental program is eligible to audition for the CMEA Eastern Region Music Festival and the NEMFA Music Festival. Instrumentalists in Concert Band or Symphonic Band may also be considered for nomination to the Quinebaug Valley Music Festival Honor Band.

*Students will be encouraged to participate in the East Woodstock Cornet Band (community band program)





Music will be selected from the Woodstock Academy Instrumental Library with supplemental pieces being purchased from vendors such as J.W. Pepper. Currently, the WAMD Instrumental Library has over 400 titles.
