2. How does an artist manipulate the elements of art and principles of design to create a portrait?
3. How did selective artists throughout history portray the portrait?
4. What is the best way to manipulate and control paint to portray the face and head?
5. How do artists use color and value to describe the form of the face and head?
6. How do artists use color to create mood in a portrait?

This unit emphasizes the use of color, values, surface texture, paint application and composition in describing the physical forms in a portrait as well as the emotional qualities of the subject.

When students are creating an effective selp portrait, they will develop the ability to:
-- explore and experience paint mixing of a variety of color combinations,
-- experiment and explore a variety of painting techniques,
-- illustrate ways that the renering of form and anatomy are achieved in painting,
-- explore forms of expression and periods of art,
-- explore textures with the medium of paint,
-- draw the head and features of the face in proportion,

All students will:
-- work with the medium of paint,
-- mix a variety of colors,
-- explore artistic styles of artists,
-- create compositions that solve a given problem,
-- demonstrate the elements of art and principles of design,
-- explore recreating a variety of textures with paint.

Project evaluations may take the form of group critiques, rating scales, checklists, written evaluations, and teacher interviews.
Group discussions give insight into the creative process and problem-solving, providing an avenue for learning, how to talk about art, how to view art, and how to improve one's skills.
