1. What are the qualities of good composition?
2. How does one build a composition?
3. How are the ideas of compositon used in art?

This unit emphasizes the principals of design, the elements of art, positive and negative space, focal point, movement , balance, and variety.

When creating compositions in Art History, students will develop the ability to:
-- utilize diferent media in accordance with the intended message,
-- apply the elements of art: line, value, color, texture, shape, and space,
-- apply the principles of design: emphasis, rhythm, repetition, balance, movement, unity, harmony, variety, and pattern,
-- apply the ideas of negative and positive space,
-- define the picture plane.

All students will:
-- define picture plane,
-- apply the elements of art,
-- apply the principles of design in their artwork,
-- create balance using negative and positive space,
-- develop a focal point/area of emphasis,
-- view and discuss other examples of artwork,
-- receive feedback on their own artwork.

1. Homework is used as a formative and summative evaluation tool.
2. Quizzes, tests, and alternative processes may be used to access concrete information such as vocabulary, equipment use, and procedures.
3. Project evaluations may take the form of group critiques, rating scales, checklists, written evaluations, and teacher interviews.
4. A portfolio demonstrates skills learned and personal, aesthetic growth. The body of work stands as a visual and / or written record of the creative process experienced throughout the semester. A portfolio may consist of journal entries, essays, reflections and art work.
5. Group discussions give insight into the creative process and problem-solving, providing an avenue for learning, how to talk about art, how to view art, and how to improve one's skills.

Students will participate in field trips.
