From the Headmaster- November, 2007
What happens when school and community work together? What happens when a solid plan is in place to complete a project? What happens when together, donors and Academy fund construction? The newly renovated Bracken Library happens! We proudly opened the space for student use on November 5th. The library can be described as a tasteful, classic renovation with all the modern technologies. It is a space designed to serve both school and community for generations to come. And it serves as a shining example of what we are able to do together.
Not only have we taken the Bracken Library to a new level, but we have also taken a giant leap forward in the world of technology in the classroom. In the process of replacing outdated computers, the Academy made the decision to purchase laptop “tablet” computer technology. These “tools of education” allow everything from note taking to direct streaming of video clips off our wireless network.
These laptop tablets work in conjunction with a classroom media cart equipped with a projector, DVD player and speakers. It is amazing to watch our faculty use this technology to deliver the curriculum to our students. Both of these instances remind me how well the Town Academy model works in quickly and efficiently benefiting students. The Academy organization moves and indeed balances its efforts toward the students. The 2007-08 school year is off to an exciting start! |
Left to Right: Sijun Kim and Haram Kim from Daegu, South Korea with members of their host family, Dan Mitra and Mrs. Ann Mitra, and Headmaster Foye.
The Mitra’s from Woodstock generously extended their home to two young men from Korea for two weeks in February. 10th graders Sijun Kim and Haram Kim shadowed junior Dan Mitra at the Academy, in addition to spending time at Pomfret Community School and the Putnam Science Academy. The boys worked on special science-oriented projects for presentation at PCS on goo-dul (Korean home heating systems) and on the historical art of Korean paper-making. In addition to research and preparation for their presentations, the boys spent time strengthening their study skills in core subjects such as math, science, and English. Many thanks to the Mitra family for their hospitality and for bringing the Academy experience to our Korean visitors.

Frau Berthild Lievenbrueck, a Music and English teacher from Stuttgart, Germany visited Woodstock Academy on Monday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 1 as part of a school partnership initiative from the Fulbright Commission in Germany.
During her stay at the Academy, Frau Lievenbrueck visited several classes in the English and Music departments where she observed teachers, answered questions from students and shared a PowerPoint presentation about her school in Germany. On Tuesday, the faculty and staff of the Academy had an opportunity to meet Frau Lievenbrueck at an informal reception where Headmaster Richard Foye officially welcomed her and presented her with a copy of A History of the Woodstock Academy by Dr. Robert Smith and a blanket depicting the various buildings of the campus.
Mr. Jason Musko, a member of the English Department, hosted Frau Lievenbrueck during her Academy visit and arranged the busy two-day schedule. Mr. Musko, a frequent traveler to Germany, will be attending a similar Fulbright teaching seminar in Marburg, Germany from May 31-June 21. As part of the program, Mr. Musko will have the opportunity to visit Frau Lievenbrueck’s school, the Johannes Keppler Gymnasium, located outside of Stuttgart.
