  • Season wrap on Centaur Nation

The season wrap-up story for the Centaurs baseball team is now available on Centaur Nation.

    Season comes to close

Luke Mathewson pitched well as the Centaurs hung tough, but lost late on the road, 3-1, to North Haven in a Class L state tournament first-round game.

North Haven broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth when Nick Parili singled home a run and an insurance run scored on an error.

Mathewson went the distance, gave up five hits and only one earned run.

Mathewson also had one of only two hits, a double, for the Centaurs who finished  10-13.

    Preston leads Centaurs to win

Eric Preston pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead the No. 31 Centaurs to the win in the Class L state tournament qualifying game over 34th-seeded Harding, 7-1, at the Bentley Athletic Complex Saturday.

The Centaurs move on to play at No. 2 seed North Haven at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in a first-round contest.

The Academy (10-12) scored four in the fourth inning to give Preston all the support he needed.

Cam Lotter had two hits for the Centaurs while Zach Ellsworth drove in a pair of runs.

    Centaurs honored

Junior pitcher and shortstop Luke Mathewson has been named an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II first team All-Star.

Mathewson sports a .462 batting average with nine doubles and 19 runs batted in.

He has also been the team's most effective starting pitcher with a 3-4 record, a 2.83 earned run average and 72 strikesouts in 59 innings plus.

Eric Preston was named an ECC honorable mention All-Star while Cam Lotter was given the team's sportsmanship award and Nick Niemiec was the Scholar-Athlete of the team.

    Centaurs fall to Plainfield

A three-run sixth inning by Plainfield broke open a close game and the Centaurs fell in an Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament play-in game to the Panthers on Tuesday, 6-2.

The Centaurs took the early lead when Luke Mathewson singled and later came home on a Doug Newton base hit in the second inning.

The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the second only to see the Centaurs go ahead on the first home run of the season for Eric Preston in the third inning.

Plainfield tied the game in the bottom of the inning before going ahead to stay with a run in the fifth before the three-run knockout blow in the sixth inning.

Mathewson, who suffered the loss on the mound, had two of the Centaurs five hits.
