  • Centaurs finish 9th, Gelhaus 8th at D-II Championship

The boys golf team finished ninth at the CIAC Division II state championship tournament at the Fairview Farms Golf Club in Harwinton.

The Centaurs were led by Jack Gelhaus who finished with a 78, tied for eighth in the field.

Junior Mason Stewart added an 83.

A third-place finish for young Centaurs in ECC Open championship

Jack Gelhaus shot a 78 and Mason Stewart an 80 to lead the Centaurs to a third-place finish in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Open golf championship on Thursday at the Quinnatisset Country Club.

Gelhaus was one of the top players early, he was 1-under par through seven holes.

But a tough bounce off the eighth green caused him to bogey that hole as well as the ninth to go into the second nine at 1-over par.

He was four over with three to play when more tough luck struck on the 17th. Another big bounce caused his second shot to bounce over not only the green, but the sand trap beyond and left the senior in the woods. He had to settle for a double bogey to finish three strokes behind co-medalists, Dylan Deotte of Killingly and Sam Gaboury of Montville.

"I was really happy," coach Rich Garceau said of Gelhaus' performance. "He struggled a little bit on the closing holes, but I think he learned a lot (Thursday) especially trying to close and putting in a really good number. With the state tournament next week, what he takes from (Thursday) and really all season, he can put to good use."

Stewart was happy with the eight-over par total, but like most golfers, not satisfied.

"It could have been better. I started off with a 37 on the front and kind of blew it on the back," Stewart said.

    Centaurs finish in 2nd

Seniors Jack Gelhaus and Eli Child were honored on Senior Day prior to the match and then the Centaurs went out and captured a share of second place in ECC Division II with Stonington with a 7-0 shutout victory over Montville at the Quinnatisset Country Club.

Junior Mason Stewart had seven pars and a birdie to lead Woodstock (14-7, 7-3) with a two-over par 38.

Gelhaus carded a 39 and Child finished with a 41.

Robert Maheu tied his season-best with a 45 in the win.

The Centaurs finished with a 163 total as a team.

The Centaurs host the Eastern Connecticut Conference championship today at the Quinnatisset Country Club at noon.

Centaurs look good in win over Plainfield
