Match 10: Centaurs celebrate Senior Day
The season is rapidly winding down for the spring sports teams with next week being the final full week of regular season play.
That means it’s time for events like Senior Day.
The Woodstock Academy girls lacrosse team celebrated its Senior Day prior to the game with the Fitch Falcons.
The Centaurs honored their six seniors; Rachel Canedy, Peyton Saracina, Emma Auker, Eliza Dutson, Sierra Bedard and Kileigh Gagnon.
“It’s going to suck,” Woodstock Academy coach Mikayla Jones said with a laugh when asked what next year will be like without the six. “We have a lot of great seniors who have gone through a lot. Sierra was a starting defender in her first year playing and now I don’t have her. She will be hard to replace. Kileigh got pulled from goal, moved into the field and she will be tough to replace in both those spots. Rachel, Peyton, Emma, Eliza, will all be hard to replace.”
Jones said, as always happens, the departure of the six seniors means that six others will have to step up and she believes she has the athletes to fill the spots.
“It was great to have Senior Day. It was great that we just could have it with the Coronavirus situation. We all love each other and I was happy everyone could come and enjoy it,” Canedy said.
Canedy said she plans to continue playing lacrosse in college.
“I will miss this team, this sport and this school,” Canedy said.
The Centaurs (2-8, 1-7 Eastern Connecticut Conference Division 2) were not happy with the result on the field as they lost to Fitch, 20-1.
Shannon Gagnon was the only Centaur to put the ball in the net.
It was Gagnon’s 13th goal of the season.
