Weekly Update 3/1/24

Weekly Announcements: February 26 - March 1

Counseling Newsletter

ASVAB
The ASVAB, to be taken on April 10, is an important assessment for students interested in the military. Students in grades 10, 11, and 12 are eligible and can sign up through their email.

JUNIORS
The time to begin focusing on what your student will do after high school is approaching, and we have several events planned to help them prepare. This spring is an excellent time to schedule college visits, particularly over April break. Students will take the SAT at WA on March 20, which is provided free of charge and does require registration. Students will have the option to take additional SATs this fall. Please schedule a meeting with your student’s counselor in March/April to discuss a plan for the future, whether it includes college, military, or workforce.

Here are some upcoming events offered by the counseling office:

College Planning Night
Tuesday, March 5 | Bates Memorial Auditorium (North Campus) | 6:30 - 7:45 p.m.
This is a great opportunity for students and families to find out about the college search and application process. All students and at least one parent/guardian should attend this program. Andrew Carter, Admissions Officer, The College of the Holy Cross will present.

WA College Fair
Wednesday, March 6 | Alumni Field House | 9:00 - 10:30 a.m.
All juniors and sophomores will attend the college fair during the school day.

SAT
Wednesday, March 20
All juniors will take the SAT during the school day, provided by The Woodstock Academy and State of Connecticut.

SENIORS
If your student is attending college in the fall, please make sure you have completed all financial aid documents. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required by most colleges, including QVCC, and some may also require the CSS Profile. Check the college’s website for deadlines and which documents are required. Even if you do not qualify for significant need-based aid, your student may be eligible for student loans.

Students generally deposit at a college by May 1. Most colleges host “Accepted Students Day” which gives students and families one more chance to visit campus before making a decision. Due to the FAFSA delay, some colleges have moved back their deposit deadlines. It is important that seniors are vigilant about checking their email and college application portals.

Now is the time to begin filling out scholarship applications. A complete list of scholarships can be found through your student’s Naviance account.

What they will need:
1. Copy of their transcript (ask your counselor)
2. Letters of recommendation (request it from the person who wrote the letter)
3. Resume
4. The application (generally found in Naviance)

If your student is unsure about their post-high school plan, please encourage them to see their school counselor. We are here to help!
