Become WA's Next Poet Laureate

The selection of the Poet Laureate has become a tradition at The Woodstock Academy. Appointed annually, the Poet Laureate will inspire and engage the community through poetry. Their duties include writing and reciting an original poem at this year's graduation and at next year's convocation as well as helping celebrate National Poetry Month in April. We encourage everyone to participate and be creative! More details can be found below.

Eligibility:
Any current WA student who will return next school year is eligible to apply. The current Poet Laureate is invited to re-apply each year.

Process and Rules:
Any interested students will submit three original poems that demonstrate their range of style, form, and content. Individual poems must be no more than 100 lines. The submission as a whole must be one Microsoft Word document containing all three poems. The document must not contain a name or any identifying information.

Students will submit their documents electronically through Turnitin by Tuesday, March 12, 2024. The Turnitin code is 42942537 and the password is Poetry (case sensitive).

On March 14, current members of the NEHS will select finalists through a blind reading of all entries. Any member applying for this position will be excused from participating in the voting process. Up to five students will be selected as finalists. These five students then must choose one of their poems to read in video format. These videos will subsequently be shared with the entire WA community, who will vote for their favorite. The new Woodstock Academy Poet Laureate will be announced at the "Raising Voices Oratorical Contest" on April 9, 2024 where they will share a poem during the open mic portion of the event. Their first official act will be to work with the current Poet Laureate, Lilah Jafar-DeCesare, to write and recite a collaborative original poem at Commencement on June 8, 2024.
