WA Receives Tax Credit for Academy Building Preservation
The Woodstock Academy receives 1.5 million credit for Academy Building preservation
The iconic Academy Building, the oldest structure on The Woodstock Academy’s campus is in nearly 150 years old and continues to be used as a classroom building to this day. The Woodstock Academy has begun a multi-year project to restore, upgrade, and repair the Academy Building in order to both preserve its historic nature and revitalize the building for generations to come.
The Woodstock Academy is exploring all funding options to efficiently complete this project, including a recently approved tax credit from the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) for 1.58 million dollars or up to 25% of the total estimated costs of the project.
This funding is a part of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development’s Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit available to eligible structures on the National or State Register of Historic Places. The Academy building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
“Any project on a historic structure comes with significant costs as the aim is to preserve the look and feel of the original structure while maintaining its functionality as a modern education facility,” said Christopher Sandford, head of school at The Woodstock Academy.
Phase one of the restoration focused on the iconic clocktower and spire will begin this summer with phase two scheduled to begin in 2022.
Jonathan Sturdevant, associate head of school for advancement, at The Academy elaborated, “This tax credit gives us a significant head start in our fundraising. We are grateful for the partnership with the State Historic Preservation Office and Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development in helping us provide the best experience for our students grounded in our historic tradition.”
