Hans Rhynhart ’22 Selected for Prestigious CBYX Scholarship

The Woodstock Academy is pleased to announce that Hans Rhynhart ’22 has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) High School scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program, inaugurated in 1983, is an agreement between the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag (Parliament) based on the growth of U.S.-Germany relations through citizen diplomacy. Each year, only 250 American and 285 German high school students are selected to receive the CBYX scholarship. In its 38-year history, the program has supported more than 27,000 students in broadening their understanding of cultural relations in both the United States and Germany.

“The program’s values and mission align with my own,” Rhynhart said. “The goal is to advance German-American relations. By spending time in this new culture, I wish to continue supporting the friendly relations between Germany and the U.S., one person at a time.”

Upon arrival to Germany, Rhynhart will attend one month of intense German language lessons. He will also get to experience a full academic year of living with a host family and taking in the culture of Germany while continuing to learn the language in full immersion.

“Hans is an outstanding example of what The Woodstock Academy embodies in a student as a lifelong learner and global citizen,” The Woodstock Academy Head of School Christopher Sandford said. “We, as an entire community, are very proud to have Hans a part of this program and we look forward to following his journey.”

Throughout the year, students will engage in activities focused on building leadership skills and expanding their knowledge of civic engagement in their host country. Under this umbrella, students will have the opportunity to meet members of the Bundestag in Berlin, and U.S. Congress and U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

“As a teacher, I couldn’t be more thrilled that Hans was chosen as a participant in this year’s Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange,” Jason Musko, German teacher at The Woodstock Academy said. “I am also excited for the rest of my students who will be able to follow his experiences both during class and on social media as it will help to motivate them and help remind them to keep in perspective the reasons that they are learning the German language—to be able to communicate in real-world situations. They will be able to witness Hans doing just that.”

“I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of the program. I couldn’t have done it without the support from Herr Musko, my family, and my friends. I’m so excited to meet all my fellow finalists in person and connect with them later this month.” Ryhnhart added.
