Class L state tournament: Centaurs on to quarterfinals

Woodstock Academy got a little revenge on Guilford who defeated the Centaurs in the 2019 semifinals with a 3-1 win on Thursday in a Class L second round match on the Grizzlies home court.

Woodstock Academy was rewarded for its efforts.

The Centaurs will host Pomperaug in the Class L quarterfinal on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Alumni Fieldhouse after 13th-seeded Pomperaug upset No. 4 Berlin, 3-2.

"We are very excited to host the quarterfinals. I knew it was a possibility and I am happy to see it come to fruition. The girls are excited and we're looking forward to playing in front of our fans," Woodstock Academy coach Adam Bottone said..

Sophomore Liliana Bottone had seven of her 22 kills in the first set when the Centaurs opened the match with a 25-19 victory in the first set.

Guilford battled back for a 26-24 win in the second set but Woodstock Academy (14-9) finished things off with 25-17 and 25-21 decisions.

"Both our offense and defense stepped up at crucial times," said Adam Bottone. "We have spent a lot of time working on both of those aspects of the game. We still need more consistency in all areas but it was a big step in the right direction."

Liliana Bottone added 16 digs and four aces while Sophie Gronski had 37 assists and 19 digs and Morgan Bonin had 17 kills, 20 digs and four aces.

The Centaurs play the winner of the Berlin-Pomperaug match on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
